-About the design
The Tale of the Heike: Vol. 9 Ujigawanosenjin (The Tale of the Heike)
Verse: “idesarabakyounoikusagaminiiwawan”

After Sasaki announced himself as the first to cross the Ujigawanosenjin, Hatakeyama Shigetada followed him across the Ujigawanosenjin.
As Hatakeyama was riding his horse, someone came forward and said, “Who is that rushing here, tell me your name?” Hatakeyama said, and the other man introduced himself as “Shigetsuna Nagase, a son of Lord Kiso’s family. Hatakeyama said, “Well, then, let us offer him up to the god of war today,” and they lined up their horses to fight.

*This piece is based on several versions of the Tale of the Heike and Heikyoku (a narrative of the Tale of the Heike accompanied by a biwa). Please note that there are slight variations in expression.

-Episodes in the making of this piece (MORINORI)
This time, I designed Hatakeyama Shigetada’s model following Ujigawanosenjin’s model (Sasaki and Kajiwara) from the story of Ujigawanosenjin. When I studied Heikyoku, I remember feeling a sense of dynamism in Hatakeyama’s words. In de sareba, let us celebrate with today’s god of war. This “Ide” is a word that invites the other person to join. Am I the only one who feels that the word “de” makes the words more dynamic? If you are a samurai, you are a god of war today. The military god is the god of military fortune, and is worshipped by cutting off the enemy and offering his blood. The wording is soft, but in my brain I translate it this way.

Come, I will make you an offering to the god of war.

As the words go, Hatakeyama Shigetada kills his opponent, so I did not design that scene. If you have a chance, I hope you will take a look at the second half of the Tale of the Heike, Volume IX, Ujigawanosenjin. Ide!
