The Tale of the Heike: Volume 11, NasunoYoichi (Yoichi)

Offshore, the Heike have their boats all lined up in a row to watch. On land, the Genji watch with their kutsubami. If I fail to do so, I will break my bow and kill myself, so that I may not have to face you again. If you are so inclined to return to your own country, do not let this arrow fall from your quiver, I prayed in my heart, and as I opened my eyes, the wind died down a little and the ogi (fan) became more manageable.

This time, we designed the latter half of the Tale of the Heike, Vol. 11, NasunoYoichi , dividing it into PART 1 and PART 2. The part where Yoichi closes his eyes and enters into prayer is the part of the story that is tightly centered in Yoichi’s mind.

I only knew the story of NasunoYoichi from my classical classes, but my enjoyment increased after learning the Heikyoku. The heightened feelings of the Heike and Genji clans, the moment when they close their eyelids and pray, the force of the arrow on the back of a horse, and the fan dancing in the sky. The text conveys a sense of dynamism. I feel that I can immerse myself in the world more when I say it out loud in Heikyoku.
